Imagine this…
Your Muslim friend, college mate or colleague is throwing
an open house party for Hari Raya Puasa and has invited you to over. You
immediately start to panic! ‘Oh no! What do I wear? Do I have to present a gift
or cash?’
In the spirit of 1 Malaysia and Hari
Raya Adilfitri celebrations, we list out a few dos and don’t’s for
Hari Raya visitation for this Raya!
1. Most Muslims do not expect guests to present
gifts or cash. However if you still insist on presenting something, sweets or
kuih raya (cookies/ cakes) are best and will be appreciated by most Muslim hosts!
2. Muslims do not expect non-Muslim
guests to be dressed in traditional Malay clothes like Baju Kurung or Baju
Kebaya although doing so would make them happy. We’re after all in a
multi-cultural society so take this opportunity to dress up in that sexy laced
Kebaya
Can’t find time to buy a Baju Kebaya,
wearing casual everyday clothes is completely acceptable! However, keep in mind
not to wear anything too revealing! Short skirts and cleavage baring tops are a
no-no!
Dont’s
1. Presenting anything black is offensive! Black ang pows,
black clothing or black greeting cards are inauspicious and unacceptable
2. Do avoid giving your Muslim friends wine/champagne or
Mandarin oranges (it’s not Chinese New Year!)
3. Stressing it
again, to respect our Muslim friends during this festive period, during your
visitation, make a conscious effort to not have revealing tops and barely there
outfits!
So what’s in style for Hari Raya this
year? Bright colours such as Pink, Orange or Green with lots of bling bling!
Sequins and beading are usually quite common on the traditional Baju Kurung. But
now we can see more of the Baju Kurung or Baju Kebaya with chiffon, Korean silk or lace material and much of the
designs that come in dual colour tones, for that extra modern twist!
Not forgetting to
accessories! Colourful crystal necklaces and bracelets are also in demand to
match with the Baju Kurung. This would definitely add bling into the festive
mood!!
Don't fancy wearing a traditional malay costume, spice it up with mixing tradition and casual. Create your own fashion statement by pairing your Kebaya top with a skirt to create that alluring feminine style or even go laidback casual with jeans! =)
So with all these styles tips for this Raya.. when you're out visiting friends and family.. eating all that rendang and ketupat, don't forget to bring out the fashionista in you and put on your new Baju Raya! =)) *smile and stay fabulous
