Sawasdee ka,
darling fashionistas!
I bet by now
you have already have an inkling of what this post is gonna be about. Yup
indeed… it’s about the land of smiles, the land of tom yum, and most importantly
the land of shopping!!!
Yes yes,
wipe that drool of your faces, coz that’s exactly what I did when I first
stepped foot into the glorious Chatuchak market.

To get there, just hop on to the BTS (train) and get yourself to Mo Chit station. Once there, just blend in to the many herds of people walking out of the train station, and they'd lead you there.
Now, I’m
sure all of you would have heard about the ever famous Chatuchak weekend
market. No visit to Bangkok will be complete without a visit (or 2….or more) here.
I’ve only
been here twice…but divas, they were 2 very different shopping experience.
The 1st
was at a time before the concept of “wholesale price” was introduced in
Bangkok. For those of you wondering what
the heck is “wholesale price”, well, these vendors have pretty much done away
with haggling, and will give you a discounted (wholesale) price if you purchase
above xxx number of pieces. So, when I
was a noob at Chatuchak, I’d haggled the whole day away, and had only managed
to cover 2 rows of Chatuchak!! Can you believe it??!?!
The 2nd
time, was a total eye opener. I went home with extra 10kg, in just about 5 hours!
And this is how I survived. (Thank God I had Tour Guide Lady Aphrodite dragging
me all about Chatuchak! I heart you sweetie!)
1) Collect them name cards! of the shops that you heart.
It's so much more easier to find them the next time you make your pilgrimage here. Scroll down - I've attached a few for you to spur start your shopping therapy in Chatuchak.
2)
Dress comfy (and airy)
Coz darling, you’re gonna
roast as the sun shine high in the noon. Forget
heels, and garb yourself in comfy thongs instead.
3) Bring a fan – electronic or plastic or paper
fan.
The last thing you wanna do is feel faint and stuffy there.
Create some air for you to breathe easier, else, tempers
WILL flare with the
temperature. You’ve been warned!
4)Trolley bag
If you plan to buy the whole of Chatuchak, or at least about THB10,000 (I kid
you not!) worth of loot, you'd thank me for letting you in on this tip. This is
probably
the juiciest tip that I can give you for Survival Bangkok Shopping
101!! It saves your shoulders, and you’d
be happier shopping about without all
the weight on your arms. You’d see many a locals
carrying canvas trolley bags
about – talk about being clever!
All in a day's loot. See what I'm talking about? Even the trolley bag was filled to it's brink! |
5) Hydrate, rehydrate and hydrate
Be
warned though, toilets are scarce, and can only be located at entrances to
the market. If you failed to find one like I did, keep it in, for the love of
shopping!
Now, to the
burning question – where to shop?!
*Laughs* Seriously?
Everywhere! But these were some of the shops that Miss Juicy and Lady Aphrodite
hearted tones!
Accessories:
Head straight
to the clock tower in the middle of Chactuchak. Find it, and you’d see 2 rows
of shops surrounding the clock tower. There’s only 1 accessories store selling
THB120 for 12 earrings at that vicinity! That’s THB10/pair (approx RM1!!!) Larger earrings are
slightly more expensive.
Handbags:
This shop,
we absolutely hearted the owner – Miss Jooi. She was very honest about her
dresses and bags, and wouldn’t pitch to you to buy something that doesn’t suit
you. Best of all, she has working dresses for top heavy girlies for
approximately THB350 , and bags from approximately THB200 (depending on size).
Track the Section and Soi numbers to find her ;) |
Clothes:
This shop tops it all!! With floral prints being oh-so-loved by many, it got us buying beyond wholesale!! (if that's even possible) ;p
Tops range from about THB120-180. Dresses from THB200.
They're located at Section 21, Soi 5-6, and they even have their own webbie!
Sua Pak
Miss Juicy hearts the tops churned out from this store. You'll be able to see the manufacturing process live in-store. Well, perhaps just a one-lady-show cutting and snitching up cute-nifty pieces to stick on to tops. Every piece is handmade, and can be made to order, if you give them sufficient time to cut up the cloth (design on the tee, not the tee itself). Price is THB150/piece (with "wholesale" purchase of 2 items or more)
Shucks! Typing this is making me itch to get my rear back to Chatuchak and continue my shopping spree!
But I've had my time there, when would you have yours? *wink*
Stay tuned for more on Bangkok Shopping!
